Golf Son Muntaner ready to show off bunkers renovation

The flagship course of Arabella Golf Mallorca and proud member of European Tour Destinations, has improved its bunkers with the Better Billy Bunker System.
In 2019, the system was already implemented on Arabella Golf Mallorca´s course Golf Son Vida, which has received great response from resident golfers as well as external golfers.
The Better Billy Bunker (BBB) system provides a maximum drainage capacity and permits a quick flow of water to the drains. The following 5 phases of installation has taken place over the last few weeks:
- Elimination of old sand and inspection of drain lines. The renovation of pipes includes new lines, which ensure drainage. The floor of the bunkers has also been renovated, to restore their original shape.
- Installation of layer of gravel. The drains are covered with gravel of the caliber established by the system, as well as the surface of the floor of the bunkers, with an even depth of 50 millimeters.
- Installation of polymer. Developed by MAFER, and applied with a spray pistol over the gravel, so that the polymer stays glued to the gravel.
- Curing of polymer. After recovering for 24 hours in the polymer, each bunker was quality controlled to check the lever of hardness.
- Sand installation. Finally, a uniform layer of 10 centimeters of silica sand that complies with the USGA requirements was installed.
Better Billy Bunker originates its name to the legendary Billy Fuller, who during his tenure at Augusta National Golf Club in the 80’s developed a construction specification what is the base of the todays BBB system. ‘His’ bunkers were affectionately called Billy Bunkers.
Maintenance of our courses Golf Son Muntaner, Golf Son Vida and Golf Son Quint are in the capable hands of our head greenkeeper Francisco Gavira, voted best greenkeeper by the Spanish Greenkeepers Association in 2018, and his amazing team.
