Costa Cálida’s gastronomy back on the menu for 2021

Costa Cálida’s gastronomy back on the menu for 2021

30 November 2020

Murcia has been given a fresh chance to showcase the region’s incredible food and drink in 2021.

The south-east region of Spain, also known as the Costa Cálida, was named as the country’s Capital of Gastronomy for 2020, following in the footsteps of Almería, León (2018) and Huelva (2017). The coveted prize was awarded by the Spanish Hospitality Federation (FEHR) and the Spanish Federation of Tourism Journalists and Writers (FEPET) with festivals and a special programme of events planned.

But with so many of the events cancelled this year because of the restrictions, the title has now been extended into 2021 – welcome news for those who want to sample the region’s superb cuisine and take part in the delayed celebrations.

A spokesperson for the Instituto de Turismo de la Región de Murcia, said: “It was fantastic for Murcia to be named as the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2020 and we are delighted at the decision to extend this honour into 2021. We look forward to sharing the whole experience with our guests.”

Murcia City and the surrounding region is famed for its huge variety and exceptional quality of authentic wines, cheeses, fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood.

It also boasts two Michelin-starred restaurants: Restaurant Magoga in the historic city of Cartagena (www.restaurantemagoga.com) and La Cabaña in Murcia (www.restaurantelacabana.com), which holds two Michelin stars.

But it’s Mediterranean-style gastronomy can be enjoyed throughout the region with its many successful exports of fresh fruit and vegetables available in its place of origin.

There is also some incredible tapas to enjoy with the firm local favourites of marinera, zarangollo, michirones, octopus and salazones among a huge selection on offer. Also famous is the region’s Calasparra rice, which was granted the Designation of Origin status in 1982.

Aside from three outstanding wine routes in Bullas, Jumilla and Yecla, the year-round mild climate ensures visitors can make the most of the dining experience on outdoor terraces to fully indulge in the appetising offering in Murcia.
