Costa Cálida stars with dining delights

03 December 2019

Murcia will be an even more appetising prospect for food enthusiasts after it was named as the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2020.

And as two of the region’s restaurants now boast an exceptional three Michelin stars between them, it is further recognition of the kind of experiences available on menus throughout the Costa Cálida.

The city of Murcia follows in the footsteps of Almería, which took the title in 2019, while title León (2018) and Huelva (2017) previously held the honour, which is awarded by the Spanish Hospitality Federation (FEHR) and the Spanish Federation of Tourism Journalists and Writers (FEPET).

As a result, the city itself and the rest of the region will launch a series of special events during 2020 as the opportunity to showcase the huge variety and exceptional quality of authentic wines, cheeses, fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood.

Among those events will be programmes and cookery workshops for children and adults alike, while special regular tasting events will take place all over the region, which will surely attract a new raft of tourists to the region which is still considered as one of the lesser-known areas in Spain.

It’s also fitting that the region has sealed another accolade for its gastronomy with a first Michelin star at Restaurant Magoga in the historic city of Cartagena (www.restaurantemagoga.com), alongside La Cabaña in Murcia (www.restaurantelacabana.com), which holds two Michelin stars.

Both restaurants combine skilful cooking, but with emphasis on memorable food experiences with some remarkable creations.

But for those who prefer a more simple experience, Murcia’s tapas and other menu selections are available all over the region to get a real taste of the local food.

A spokesperson for the Instituto de Turismo de la Región de Murcia, said: “It is a fantastic honour for Murcia to be named as the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2020. We will be working on some exciting projects throughout the year and would love to share the experience with our guests.”
