Carnoustie Country Hosts The Vest Jamboree

Carnoustie Country Hosts The Vest Jamboree

17 August 2016

Carnoustie Country recently played host to a tournament for one of the UK’s oldest ladies golf organisations, when the Veteran Ladies Golf Association held its annual tournament at historic Panmure Golf Club.

Every year, the Veteran Ladies Golf Association, which started in 1921, holds a tournament for its four regions: England South, Midlands, England North and Scotland. “This tournament has been held since 1936 and is unofficially known as ‘The Vets Jamboree’,” said Gillian Kirkwood, President of the Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association, who added that this is the first time The Vets Jamboree has been held in Carnoustie Country.

“The tournament is held in a different region every year and in August 2016, it was Scotland’s turn to host The Vets Jamboree. As the Vets enjoy links golf and Carnoustie Country provides an excellent choice of links courses, we narrowed our choice down to this corner of Scotland and finally selected Panmure, with teams, supporters and officials staying at the excellent Woodlands Hotel in Broughty Ferry.”

Gillian explained that, during The Vets Jamboree, four teams of eight play each other on a round-robin basis over three days. “This year, after a very close contest, England North narrowly claimed the win over England South, with Midlands in third position and Scotland fourth,” said Gillian.

After being presented with the winner’s trophy, the Miller-Stirling Salver, the Captain of England North, Sue Cotter, commented on how much her team had enjoyed playing at Panmure. “This is a beautiful course in immaculate condition which is a true test of golf,” said Sue.

Gillian revealed that all the teams had commented very favourably on their stay in Carnoustie Country. “We had a wonderful time and agreed that Panmure should be on everyone’s ‘bucket list’,” added Gillian. “As well as the magnificent course, we were given an incredibly warm welcome by everyone at Panmure, which made the event so easy to run and contributed considerably to the wonderful atmosphere of our historic tournament.”
